SYDNEY, Australia - Markets were calm but soft in Asia on Wednesday with all the major bourses, except Hong Kong's, losing ground, albeit moderately.
In Japan the Nikkei 225 closed 107.22 points or 0.51% lower at 21,086.59.
The Shanghai Composite fell 5.79 points or 0.19% to 2,976.28.
The Australian All Ordinaries lost 18.40 points or 0.27% to 6,716.10.
Going against the trend, the Hong Kong Hang Seng added 36.00 points ot 0.13% to 28,221.98.
On foreign exchange markets the euro rose a few points to 1.1372. The British pound was little changed at 1.2679, as was the Japanese yen at 107.47.
The Swiss franc firmed a fraction to 0.9752.
The Canadian dollar edged up to 1.3163. The Australian dollar was a tad stronger at 0.6978.
The New Zealand dollar advanced to 0.6664.
Overnight on Wall Street, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was ahead 178.9 points, or 0.67%, at 26,548.64.
The Standard and Poor's 500 slipped 27.9 points, or 0.95%, to 2,917.45.
The main damage was in the tech sector where the Nasdaq Composite fell 120.98 points, or 1.51%, to 7,884.72.
