Staff members from Confidential Recovery recently participated in a meeting about issues facing our nation's Veterans with Veterans Affairs Secretary Denis McDonough and Congressman Mike Levin. Both the Secretary and the Congressman consider the services offered to Veterans in San Diego to be exemplary, and they were seeking feedback and help so that they could emulate the services available in San Diego for Veterans in other areas.
The meeting was held at the Oceanside V.A. clinic, and the focus was on improving Veterans' housing, medical support, and access to mental health support services.
Jay Wylie, Veteran-in-recovery and Operations Manager at Confidential Recovery said afterward, "Almost half the homeless in the country are in California." His work helping the Veterans recover from substance use disorders provides him with a close view of their struggle. "The substance abuse problem is rampant in the homeless community, with around 2/3 of them having lifetime histories of drug or alcohol use disorders." According to SAMHSA, 38% of homeless people abuse alcohol while 26% abuse other drugs.
The round table was part of a busy day for Congressman Mike Levin and Veterans Affairs Secretary Denis McDonough, who also attended the re-naming of the San Diego VA Medical Center to honor Capt. Jennifer Moreno, an Army nurse from Logan Heights, who was killed in 2013 during a Special Operations raid in Afghanistan.
The Fentanyl Overdose Epidemic Makes Access to Treatment More Urgent
The prevalence of hyper-potent fentanyl has caused accidental overdose to become the leading killer of people aged 18-45 in the United States. Confidential Recovery founder Scott H. Silverman has been a high-profile advocate for reducing stigma and increasing the availability of treatment for addiction. "Fatal opioid overdoses have unfortunately been much more common than COVID-19 deaths and have not gotten nearly the appropriate attention and response."
Help is Available for Veterans
As homeless Veterans (and housed alike) continue to struggle getting the mental health support they need to recover from a substance abuse disorder or other mental health difficulty, Jay and the team at Confidential Recovery would like to remind all Veterans that help is available. The VA offers an around the clock Veterans Crisis Line that provides help and crisis support - even for veterans not enrolled in its health care network. (The phone number is 800-273-8255.) San Diego based Veterans and family can get in contact with Confidential Recovery at (619) 452-1200.
